Civil Ceremonies

Generally civil weddings in Italy can only be performed in a Town Hall or a property authorized by the state. Civil ceremonies can be performed by mayors or other authorised officials of the state. In most, but not all locations, you are required to sign a Declaration of Intention to Marry approximately 2 to 4 days prior to your marriage ceremony and as the proceedings are in Italian an interpreter is required.

In order for your marriage to be celebrated in Italy the following documents will be required a minimum of one month prior to your arrival:

  • Original or certified copies of your long form birth certificates.
  • Nulla Osta - (Depending on Nationality) from your Consulate or Department of Foreign Affairs (Irish Passport holders). The Nulla Osta is the civil letter of freedom.
  • Photocopy of Current Passports.
  • Photocopy of passports of two witnesses with details of their marital status, occupation and place of residence.

If either person has been previously married the following documents will also be required:

  • Certified copy of previous marriage certificate(s)
  • Original divorce (decree absolute) or death certificate(s) of previous spouse(s)

If either party has a name change the original deed poll will also be required.

Should the names on any documents differ a solicitors letter will be required.

** Please note: Procedures above may vary depending on nationality and documents and residency requirement are subject to change.**

Religious Ceremonies

In Italy, a Catholic Ceremony can only be celebrated in a Church. It can be celebrated between members of different faiths provided one partner is Catholic. Dispensation will be required from your local parish priest and Bishop to marry a non-Catholic and also to marry in another parish.

The following will be required to be arranged:

  • Religious Nulla Osta from your Bishop.
  • Certificate of Dispensation from your Parish Priest.
  • Certificate of Baptism.
  • Certificate of Confirmation.
  • Certificate of Pre-Marriage Course.
  • All documents as stated for the civil ceremony.

** Religious documents are only valid for 6 months and must be in the parish in Italy at least 30 days before the wedding day**.

Blessings & Vow Renewals

If you wish to have a blessing in Italy and the civil marriage in your own country this can also be facilitated.

We can also arrange symbolic ceremonies in beautiful surroundings.
